fashion capital of the world, this urban nightclub is inspired by the eclectic variety of colors, patterns and the tactility of the local street fashion. Designing from the interior out, multiple spaces are developed in terms of atmosphere and experience, focusing on formal capacities and details to enhance the effects. The building is divided into club and lounge areas which are enhanced by their location within the building. The club, accessible from the busy street, tunnels the club-goers underground into a large, open dance floor and bar. Above this space at the top of the building is a bright performance space, including a catwalk to draw the local fashion in. In contrast, the lounge has smaller, softer spaces for more intimate gathering. When each void is filled, the new mass pushes against the strands securing them in place and providing additional strength to create a cohesive structural system. The mass is composed of a thick glass which has a frosty appearance similar to ice. This material plays between the reading of the elements as heavy or lightweight, thin or solid. The motion of individual modules is activated when a viewer begins speaking near the piece and sound is received by the attached microphone. Upon hearing, the piece slowly opens until fully erect, as if to speak back, then shuts suddenly after a moment of silence. While open, the viewer catches a glimpse of themselves as their reflection is revealed on the inner mirrored backing. The electronics were prototyped extensively using a solderless breadboard, and a printed circuit board was manufactured from the final circuit design. In this final circuit, an electret microphone converts sounds into weak electrical signals. An amplifier boosts these signals to usable levels. A low-pass filter eliminates high frequency noise before sending the amplified signals to a comparator. The comparator converts the analog signal into a digital signal--producing a low output (0V) whenever the signal falls below a particular threshold voltage and a high output (5V) otherwise. Since the output from the comparator may change many times per second, it is sent to a timer to output digital signals at more regular, one second intervals. These regular outputs are read by an Arduino microcontroller, which uses them to control the positions of several servo motors. Each moving module is controlled by a servo attached to a 4-arm linkage. of canals, a series of floating pavilions can travel to remote locations allowing for a variation of events to take place across the city. These same pavilions also concentrate in different densities and configurations on the main site - located on the Greenwich Peninsula next to the Millennium Dome. Each boat is equipped with a dynamic canopy capable of shifting its form. These canopies can negotiate climatic impact by responding to sun, wind, and light; they can also act as cultural amplifiers by responding to human activity, or their behavior can be choreographed to support the specific design intent for a cultural event. These behavioral capacities exist at the unit level, but also take on entirely new aggregated effects when the units group together in larger configurations. The vortex that occurs when these forces collide provides a dynamic experience. Exhibition and research spaces are divided into 5 individual trajectories based on the branch of geology each is associated with. The curation of these branches is organized by scale and time (duration of formation), which is reinforced through a gradient from dark subgrade spaces to light open galleries. These materials interact perpendicular to each other to create the tectonics necessary to penetrate the sky. A short distance north of the city center, Montrose Point provides an opportune experience for skyline viewing and relfection. The process began with the notion of deliberately referencing the skyscraper, by suggesting a horizontal tower, inverting the relationship of the materials.
